The Brazilian football player Ronaldo initiated procedures in January 2007 to sue Guangxi Golden Throat Group over its use of his image in a three-year long campaign for throat lozenges. In television, print and internet banner adverts, Ronaldo was shown holding up packets of “Golden Throat Lozenges” and wearing a strip on which the product’s name was written in Chinese characters. The footballer has claimed that he never granted permission for his image to be used in this way.

According to reports in the Chinese press, the makers of the throat lozenges acquired the photographs for the campaign during a Beijing dinner to which they invited Ronaldo in 2003. The Real Madrid striker was allegedly paid $300,000 for the photographs, although a contract was never put in place relating to their future use. Ronaldo started litigation proceedings, it is reported, after he was made aware that he had missed out on endorsement deals with other Chinese companies due to the general assumption that he was under contract with the Golden Throat Group.

Guangxi Golden Throat Group has denied any wrongdoing.
